Scott Singer, the former mayor of Boca Raton, narrowly defeated his closest rival in a five-way contest to determine the Republican candidate for Florida’s 25th congressional district.
The freshly-redesigned district now spans areas in three counties – Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade – primarily along the coast. The district is currently represented by Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz and contained demographics favorable to Democrats before the redistricting, which places it in hot contention. Moskowitz fended off a challenge from Oliver Larkin, a Democratic Socialist who targeted him from the left.
Singer bested his closest rival, George R. Moraitis, within a five-candidate Republican primary field. Combined tallies from Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties showed Singer with 11,758 votes, Moraitis with 10,299, Dan Franzese with 9,634, Joseph “Joe” Kaufman with 4,630 and Raven Harrison with 1,183.
In Palm Beach County, where all 101 precincts reported, Singer finished first with 4,839 votes, or 32.35 percent. Franzese placed second with 4,567 votes, or 30.53 percent, followed by Moraitis with 3,380 (22.60 percent), Kaufman with 1,783 (11.92 percent) and Harrison with 390 (2.61 percent).
