Federal Highway Project Will Remove Lanes, Add Safety Features in Boca Raton

A $6.3 million project to remove lanes, add safety features and resurface 1.3 miles of Federal Highway in Boca Raton from Camino Real to NE 8th Street (Mizner Boulevard) is expected to begin in the next several weeks.

The Florida Department of Transportation has awarded the contract for the project to General Asphalt Company, LLC, with construction expected to wrap up in late 2027. The work centers on milling and resurfacing the roadway throughout the project area to “promote long-term infrastructure resiliency,” project documents said. Officials will also repurpose a section of the corridor and add pedestrian, bicycle and intersection upgrades, while removing one travel lane.

From Camino Real to SE Mizner Boulevard (SE 5th Street), the roadway will be reconfigured by eliminating the existing 11-foot outside lane and narrowing the median. The changes will create 7-foot separated bicycle lanes and 11-foot-wide sidewalks. From SE Mizner Boulevard (SE 5th Street) to NE Mizner Boulevard (NE 8th Street), the median will be narrowed to provide matching 7-foot separated bicycle lanes instead of sacrificing travel lanes.

A new signalized mid-block crosswalk with increased lighting will be added south of Plaza Real. Pedestrian push buttons and signal heads at signalized intersections along the corridor will be upgraded to improve safety and connectivity for people walking. At the intersection of Federal Highway and Camino Real, existing traffic signals will be replaced with mast arms, and a second left-turn lane will be constructed for northbound traffic to improve capacity.

Curb ramps and pedestrian detectors will be modified to meet ADA accessible criteria along the entire stretch, while signage and pavement markings will be replaced and upgraded to improve visibility and accessibility, according to the project’s specifications.

The work will likely create traffic hangups in the area, with temporary traffic restrictions set to apply during construction. Single-lane closures will be allowed along Federal Highway between Camino Real and SE 5th Street (SE Mizner Boulevard) with no directional restrictions. Two-lane closures in that segment will be permitted during non-peak hours on “non-event days,” plus nights and weekends. Northbound two-lane closures may occur from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Southbound two-lane closures may occur from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Between SE 5th Street (SE Mizner Boulevard) and NE 8th Street (NE Mizner Boulevard), single-lane closures will be allowed during non-peak hours on non-event days, nights and weekends. Northbound single-lane closures may run from 7:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. Southbound single-lane closures may run from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Access to businesses and residences will be maintained at all times, the FDOT project specs indicated. The speed limit within the project limits will remain 35 mph.
