High Surf, Coastal Flood, Wind Advisories All Issued for Palm Beach County (Exclusive Video)

Heavy surf, beach erosion and quick-moving currents continued at Boca Raton beaches Tuesday, with the National Weather Service issuing high surf, coastal flood and wind advisories all at once.

The weather service’s Miami office said the coastal flood warning and high surf advisory for coastal Palm Beach County remain in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday. A high rip current risk also continues through Wednesday evening. Forecasters said significant coastal flooding is expected. Numerous roads may be closed, and low-lying property, including homes, businesses and some critical infrastructure, will be inundated. Some shoreline erosion is also expected.

Breaking waves of 8 to 13 feet are forecast in the surf zone, creating dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. The weather service said rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

At Boca Inlet, an unusually-strong current blasted between the jetties, with erosion affecting nearby beaches, where dry sand was almost nonexistent. Within the inlet, a shoal began to develop along the north jetty about halfway through – a common trouble area that usually required maintenance dredging after storms. On other beaches, such as those north of Red Reef Park, erosion had effectively made the beach a no-go zone.

A separate wind advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday for metro and coastal areas of Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, including Boca Raton and Delray Beach. Northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts up to 40 mph. The weather service said the gusts could blow around unsecured objects and bring down tree limbs, which could cause a few power outages. It said the winds can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Forecasters urged residents to take steps to protect flood-prone property. Drivers should not go around barricades or through water of unknown depth, they said.
