Swim Advisory Lifted for Lake Boca, ICW Near Camino Real

The state Department of Health has lifted a swim advisory for Lake Boca and nearby waterways that had been in place for nearly a week following a wastewater spill.

The health department announced Wednesday that the advisory for Camino Real, connected to Lake Boca and the Intracoastal Waterway near the Boca Raton Resort, has been rescinded. Coordinated laboratory testing conducted with the city of Boca Raton and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection found bacteria levels in the water have returned to an acceptable range, allowing the public to resume water-related activities in the area.

The advisory was first issued Sept. 18 after a wastewater spill was discovered near the resort property, prompting officials to warn residents and visitors to avoid contact with the affected waterways while testing was underway. City officials said at the time that drinking water was not affected by the spill.

Health officials had coordinated testing and cleanup efforts with the state environmental protection agency, saying they hoped normal activities could resume within 24 to 48 hours – a timeline that ultimately stretched to about a week.
