Boca Raton has officially broken ground on a $2 million project to build a railroad crossing at Jeffery Street and extend the roadway as a main east-west thoroughfare.

The new crossing means another will close, as state law allows for crossings to be spaced a minimum distance from one another. The New crossing will be located on Jeffery Street, just east of NW 2nd Avenue, where Clint Moore Street ends. It will run through a portion of North Park. The crossing at NW 28th Street, farther to the south, will be eliminated. City officials said the new crossing “will establish an important east-west connection in northeast Boca Raton, improving access and connectivity for residents, visitors, and businesses.”

The project has not been without some detractors, who have said the project will bring more traffic to the northern portion of town, however officials have touted a number of potential benefits, including reconnecting neighborhoods that were cut off when the railroad was built, improving emergency response capabilities, providing convenient access to North Park, which is currently under construction, and enhancing overall traffic circulation. City staff have also expressed a belief that the crossing โ€“ and transforming Jeffery Street into a thru-street โ€“ will lead to higher property values and investment around the corridor.

A $2 million Congressional Community Project Funding award will help support the project, which is being coordinated with Florida East Coast Railway, LLC, and the Florida Department of Transportation.

According to city staff, design and permitting were completed by the end of the third quarter of 2026. Now, in the fourth quarter, the groundbreaking represents the kickoff of the latest stage, which includes construction and the activation of the railroad crossing. That phase is planned to last about a year, beginning now and lasting unto the final quarter of 2027. The project is expected to be closed out completely by the end of 2027.

The effort to create a new railroad crossing dates back to the adoption of the cityโ€™s 2022 Comprehensive Plan, which identified the extension of Clint Moore Road and Jeffery Street east of the I-95 bridge to Federal Highway as a โ€œkey transportation initiative.โ€ The proposed extension will enhance the roadway network in the northeast section of the city, support future redevelopment opportunities, and create a continuous corridor between U.S. 441 (SR-7) and Federal Highway, a memorandum from the city managerโ€™s office said.
