A Boca Raton man is accused of violating Florida’s ‘super speeder’ law while intoxicated on Palmetto Park Road, according to police.
William Demoss, 31, was taken into custody shortly before midnight June 17 following a traffic stop on West Palmetto Park Road, according to Boca Raton Police Department reports and a probable cause affidavit filed in court this week. Police said an officer in a marked patrol vehicle observed a gray 2025 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck “rapidly accelerating” while turning eastbound onto West Palmetto Park Road near Military Trail. The officer accelerated to approximately 90 m.p.h. in an attempt to catch up to the driver, who was estimated to have been traveling at about 90 m.p.h. in a 40 m.p.h. zone, the report said.
The officer activated emergency lights and siren, and the vehicle came to a stop near a shopping center further up the road. When questioned about his speed, Demoss allegedly told the officer, “I just stepped on the gas, man,” and added, “My car got a little turbo.” Officers also said they detected an odor of alcohol in the vehicle, though the driver said he had not consumed anything.
An inventory search of the vehicle found an empty red plastic cup on the front passenger-side floorboard that “smelled strongly of an unknown alcoholic beverage,” the report said. Following a field sobriety test, Demoss was taken into custody, but is then alleged to have refused a breath test and to sign arrest-related paperwork. He was charged with DUI, DUI-Refusal, refusing to accept a citation and the aforementioned “Super Speeder” violation.
The state’s “Super Speeder” law, which went into effect in July 2025, upgrades excessive speeding to a criminal traffic charge rather than a simple traffic ticket. It applies to those driving 50 m.p.h. over the limit or 100 m.p.h. regardless of the speed limit, punishable by up to 90 days in jail, a 1-year license suspension, and fines up to $2,500 for a first offense.
He was freed from custody after posting $2,000 combined bail for the charges.
