A Boca Raton woman was arrested Sunday after her now-husband told Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputies she chased him from their home with a kitchen knife during an argument over money, according to a report.

Yohaana Rodriguez Lopez, 31, a Dominican national, was taken into custody on a felony charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. According to the sheriff’s office report, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call at the couple’s residence in unincorporated Boca Raton around 5 p.m. on April 12. The alleged victim told deputies he “brought” Lopez to the United States on a 90-day visa in 2020 along with her young son, and the two married in 2023.

The husband told investigators that he and Lopez had been arguing about finances when she demanded $500 for what was described as a “driver’s license arrangement.” When he refused, she allegedly pulled a black-handled kitchen knife from a drawer and chased him toward the front door, swinging the weapon at him.

The husband told deputies he lunged backward twice to avoid being struck and “feared for his life.” After he exited the house, his wife allegedly locked the door and blocked his attempts to re-enter, the report stated. A neighbor who identified himself as a witness told deputies he saw the man approach the front door and “lunge backward defensively” twice, then watched him try unsuccessfully to open the door before it appeared to be held shut from inside, according to the report.

Lopez gave a different account when she emerged from the home wearing a nightgown, the report stated. Through the interpretation of a Spanish-speaking deputy, she told investigators she had been doing laundry and preparing dinner when her husband — whom she described as intoxicated — approached her on the stairs demanding money. She denied any physical altercation or being at the front door and said he had been outside for some time without trying to re-enter.

Deputies arrested her after determining that the independent witness account corroborated the husband’s version of events and that her statements were inconsistent.

Lopez was released from the Palm Beach County Jail on $5,000 bond.
