A pair of local women have been charged with stealing more than $2,000 worth of merchandise from the Macy’s department store at the Boca Town Center mall after allegedly being caught by the store’s loss prevention officer.
Boca Raton police, in a court filing, stated Maya Grinberg, 71, and Marina Kuralesina, 73, both of Delray Beach, were detained by the store’s loss prevention officer after he surveilled the women as they strolled through the store for about two hours, allegedly concealing items along the way. The officer told Boca Raton police that the women first caught their attention after they pulled up to the store in a vehicle that they believed to have been involved in a previous shoplifting incident.
According to the police report, the women were seen “repeatedly entering and exiting multiple changing rooms while concealing merchandise” on three different floors. Specifically, the report alleges that on the first floor, Grinberg grabbed a pair of shoes, walked into the bathroom hallway, and concealed the shoes inside a bag. Meanwhile, Kuralesina allegedly selected a pair of shoes and concealed them by folding them into a shirt.
After spending two hours at the store, both women allegedly exited the Glades entrance and were apprehended by the store’s loss prevention officer and other employees. The total value of the stolen items was $2,189, the report stated. Also, it said, both women confessed to taken the items during interviews with police, including an interview conducted with the assistance of a Russian-speaking Macy’s employee, since Kuralesina only understood the Russian language. Both of the suspects were American nationals, according to the report.
Both Grinberg and Kuralesina were charged with felony grand theft and transported to the Palm Beach County Jail. They have both since been released on $5,000 bond.
