A Boca Raton man has been charged with drunk driving after striking a building along Federal Highway in Delray Beach with his vehicle.
According to a police report, Thomas J. Roberts, 63, was charged with DUI after Delray Beach police were called to 1643 N. Federal Highway for a report of a car having crashed into an apartment building and a stop sign. The report stated that the driver, later identified as Roberts, was unharmed and waiting for police to arrive after the 10:10 p.m. incident Wednesday night.
Roberts allegedly told police he had finished dinner with a friend and was turning around to retrieve an item he left behind when the accident occurred. Police officers at the scene said they detected the scent of alcohol, leading to a DUI investigation. The report stated breath tests turned up blood alcohol content levels of .171 and .175, both more than double Florida’s legal limit of .08.
Roberts was released from custody on his own recognizance.
