A woman who met a Boca Raton man on a ‘sugar daddy’ website is accused of taking his $15,000 Cartier bracelet and threatening him with a false accusation if he did not give her another piece of jewelry.

According to court documents filed this week, officers responded at approximately 12:58 a.m. July 1 to a 911 hang-up call at a Boca Raton residence whose address was redacted. Upon arrival, officers encountered both the alleged victim and the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Edith Smith of Miami. Police said the alleged victim told investigators he had met Smith through the dating website SugarDaddy.com and invited her to his home on the evening of June 30. He told officers the pair shared drinks and talked about “life” before Smith allegedly became interested in two Cartier bracelets he was wearing.

According to a police report, the man allowed Smith to try on one of the bracelets, identified as a yellow Cartier Juste un Clou bracelet worth about $15,000. Investigators allege Smith then asked to keep the bracelet and requested the second bracelet as well. When the man refused, Smith allegedly threatened to accuse him of sexually assaulting her before leaving the residence while still wearing the bracelet.

According to police, Smith then placed the 911 call and left the line open without speaking to dispatchers, likely to create a record of the incident. During questioning, officers said Smith denied taking the bracelet and disputed portions of the allegations. The affidavit states she denied asking to try on a bracelet and said she was unaware of a second bracelet. The report stated, however, that another officer located the Cartier bracelet on Smith’s right wrist, and she was unable to provide photographic evidence or other proof that the bracelet belonged to her.

Police said a witness inside the residence corroborated portions of the alleged victim’s account, telling investigators he overheard Smith asking about the bracelets and allegedly making the threat after being refused the second bracelet. The witness’s identity has been withheld.

Based on the investigation, officers arrested Smith on one count of grand theft. She was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to jail records included in the arrest paperwork. She remained there on Thursday in lieu of $10,000 bond on the grand theft charge.
