Boca Raton officials announced this week that the beach at Spanish River Park has once again earned the prestigious international “Blue Flag Beach” award for the 2026–27 season, marking the city’s second consecutive year receiving the designation. The city officially raised the Blue Flag on Thursday, celebrating Boca Raton’s “continued leadership in environmental stewardship, coastal management, and sustainability,” the city said in a statement.

Boca Raton remains one of only a select few beaches in the United States to receive the internationally recognized “Blue Flag” distinction, which recognizes excellence in environmental education, water quality, environmental management, and safety. The designated Blue Flag area extends from Tower 18 to the southern boundary of Spanish River Park.

Administered globally by the Foundation for Environmental Education, the Blue Flag Beach Award is considered one of the world’s most respected eco-certifications for beaches and marinas. To qualify, destinations must meet and maintain more than 30 rigorous criteria focused on sustainable coastal management and environmental education.

“Receiving the Blue Flag designation for a second consecutive year reflects Boca Raton’s commitment to protecting our coastline and providing an exceptional beach experience,” said Mayor Andy Thomson. “This recognition highlights the dedication of our staff and community to maintaining the highest standards for our beaches.”

As part of the Blue Flag program, educational information boards at the Central Tunnel pavilion provide beachgoers with current water quality information, beach safety guidance, conservation initiatives, and details about environmental programs offered through Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. The free educational offerings continue to support the city’s Blue Flag status and “foster community engagement in protecting Boca Raton’s coastal ecosystems,” the city’s statement said.

“Our continued Blue Flag recognition highlights the City’s ongoing investment in sustainability and coastal preservation,” said Tina Batoh-Jennings, the city’s Sustainability Manager. “It represents the collective effort to protect and enhance our shoreline for future generations.”

The designation also recognizes the city’s mature dune ecosystem, ongoing conservation efforts, and the dedication of staff across multiple departments working to preserve Boca Raton’s coastal environment.
