A 21-year-old Delray Beach man has been charged in connection with a shootout that occurred in the parking lot of the Boca Raton Target store on Thursday.
According to a police report, Ca’Vantaevis Ty’re Guy, 21, is alleged to have approached another man with the intent to rob him. At that point, the alleged victim pulled a weapon in self-defense, leading to an exchange of gunfire in the parking of the store, located on U.S. 441 (SR-7) in unincorporated Boca Raton. Initial calls to 911 suggested a third shooter, however police did not find evidence of such. But the victim did tell deputies that a second man was with the suspect – Guy – when they “ran up” on him.
The incident played out at 10:12 a.m., drawing a large response from Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputies. Callers to the county’s 911 system initially reported three black males engaging in a dispute with gunfire, providing detailed descriptions of the clothing each of the men were wearing. Guy, who was identified by his clothing and physical description by witnesses, was arrested while riding an electric bicycle south of the location where the shooting took place.
The police report said the victim reported two men came up to him while he was walking home from the Target store and had cut through the parking lot of an adjacent medical office, where the exchange of gunfire occurred. The victim said he “blacked out” during the fight that ensued after he was approached by the two men, and ultimately he pulled a Glock 17 9mm pistol from his backpack and began firing at one of the men, later identified as Guy. Guy was allegedly caught on video returning fire with a Glock 45 9mm pistol that police would later confiscate.
The two men took cover between vehicles in the parking lot while exchanging shots, with Guy alleged to have ultimately fled the scene. The victim had reported his iPhone had been taken during the incident, with the report stating that surveillance footage captured Guy allegedly throwing the iPhone in a row of bushes before traveling south on SR-7.
“Several vehicles and one residence” sustained damage from gunfire, though no one was shot. There was some blood found at the scene, the report stated, but investigators believe it could have been the result of the initial physical altercation or an injury sustained during the exchange.
Deputies ultimately made a determination that the victim had fired in self-defense, while Guy was accused of being the aggressor who had initially tried to rob him. The third man, who has not been charged, was identified by police and is still the subject of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disturbing event.
Guy was charged with robbery using a firearm and using a weapon during the course of committing a felony. He was being held without bail on the robbery charge, with bail having been set at $25,000 on the weapons charge. Guy remained lodged in the Palm Beach County Jail on Friday night.
