A 17-year-old Boca Raton resident was killed after being struck by the 19-year-old driver of a pickup truck after what police described as a “confrontation” that remains under investigation.

Officer Jessica Desir said the incident occurred along the 1300 block of SW 14th Avenue on Sunday, Nov. 30, just before 2:30 a.m. The name of the juvenile was not released – police described the victim only as a 17-year-old juvenile from town.

According to a statement from police, the driver of a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado – identified as Douglas Brown, Jr., 19, of Boca Raton – was stopped on the roadway with two passengers in the vehicle. There was a confrontation and the victim, “known to the driver,” the statement said, approached the Chevrolet on foot to “engage the occupants of the vehicle.” At some point, the Chevrolet drove off while the victim was still in close proximity to the vehicle. The driver, according to the statement, struck the victim as the vehicle drove off, causing life-threatening injuries.

“The driver did not stop and proceeded to leave the area,” the statement said. “A traffic stop was conducted on the Chevrolet a short time later, and the driver was detained for questioning.”

There were two passengers in the Silverado – Grant Fawcett, 18, Boca Raton, and a 16-year-old juvenile from Sunrise whose name was not released. They were unharmed. Brown, the victim, was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police are seeking the public assistance in gathering more information on the case, which is being investigated by the department’s Traffic Homicide Unit. Anyone with information regarding the ongoing investigation is being asked to contact Officer Casas at 561-544- 8579.
