Boaters, take note: your usual routine for letting down those outriggers and antennas prior to a ride under the A1A bridge at Boynton Inlet might not suffice in a few weeks.

Included in the U.S. Coast Guard’s periodic Local Notice to Mariners for the region is a warning about work poised to begin soon that will improve the surface deck and underpinnings of the bridge, but temporarily lessen the maximum clearance for boaters navigating underneath it. The bridge rehabilitation at the A1A Bridge is set to begin Monday, Jan. 12, 2026, and be completed Monday, May 18, 2026. A containment system will be installed across one-half of the bridge, temporarily reducing the vertical clearance by 4-feet.

“There will be no in-water equipment,” the notice said. “All mariners are advised to transit the area with caution.”

According to records from the state Department of Transportation, the project includes replacing the existing bridge coating — which typically means removing old paint and corrosion protection and applying a new protective system to steel components, plus waterproofing the concrete deck to protect the surface of the bridge from water infiltration and extend its lifespan. Additionally, concrete barriers will be cleaned and re-coated to protect them from the elements and improve aesthetics. There will also be various concrete repairs where needed on the bridge structure.

For vehicular traffic, no full roadway closures are expected, though work may slow the trip across the span, which is fixed and does not open or close for vessel traffic. There may be some partial channel restrictions, for a short time, while painting is ongoing.
