A New Jersey man has been charged with violating Florida’s new “super speeder” law by traveling well in excess of 100 m.p.h. on I-95 in Boca Raton, leading to his arrest by officers from the Florida Highway Patrol.
Ryan Mathie, 27, of Marlboro, N.J., was allegedly clocked at 116 m.p.h. on the highway by a state trooper at 10:36 p.m. Saturday, according to a police report. Florida’s new “super speeder” law, which went into effect July 1, subjects drivers who exceed the speed limit by 50 m.p.h. or more, or drive 100 m.p.h. or faster on any road, to heightened penalties.
In Mathie’s case, his vehicle – a 2020 Acura – was paced by the trooper for 1,000 feet in the center lane of the highway’s southbound lanes near the Congress Avenue exit in Boca Raton, the report said. The speed limit on I-95 in that area is 65 m.p.h.
Mathie is facing an addition charge of DUI after allegedly refusing to submit to a breathalyzer test, which could lead to a one-year license suspension.
Violating the “super speeder” law can lead to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine for a first offense, which is considered a criminal traffic offense rather than a civil citation, as in the case of a normal speeding ticket. Stiffer penalties are provided for repeat offenders.
