Highland Beach plans to install in-ground LED lighting at its eight mid-block pedestrian crosswalks on Ocean Boulevard (A1A) as part of a $375,000 state-funded pedestrian safety project that also upgrades the adjacent shared-use path and addresses flooding concerns.
The town’s commissioners approved a $283,920 agreement with Lux Solar Inc. for the devices at a recent meeting. The new bi-directional flashing yellow lights will activate from the same pedestrian push buttons that are already present at some of the intersections to activate sign-posted lights, and will be embedded in composite housings connected by flexible conduit.

The eight locations, identified in a Palm Beach Metropolitan Planning Organization road safety audit of the corridor, are at Grand Court (milepost 5.017), near the Regency Highland (milepost 5.89), near the Toscana Towers (milepost 6.15), at the Highland Beach Club (milepost 6.293), at the Coronado Ocean Club (milepost 6.507), near the Ambassadors East (milepost 6.577), near the Monterey House (milepost 6.817) and near the Delray Sands Resort (milepost 7.137).
The broader pedestrian safety project also includes milling, repaving and regrading portions of the shared-use path alongside A1A. According to the town’s funding request to the Florida legislature, the path work will address elevation and drainage changes from a recent FDOT roadway resurfacing project that have caused flooding and forced pedestrians into travel lanes in places.

The project must be completed within six months of the date Highland Beach officials issue the contractor a formal notice to proceed, the date of which was not available for publication.
