A 30-year-old Boca Raton woman has been charged with attempting to steal 22 individual items from a department store at the Town Center mall, allegedly telling police she was “unsure” why she did so.

Yassmine Talby, 30, of Boca Raton, was charged with felony grand theft following the incident, which occurred April 5 at about 5:48 p.m. at the Macy’s store in the mall on Glades Road. According to a police report, the store’s loss prevention staff called police to tell them they had detained a woman who had allegedly tried to take a large number of items from the store without paying for them.

The report states that a woman, later identified as Talby, was allegedly observed on security cameras selecting numerous jewelry and clothing goods before entering a restroom with a “bag full of items” and then exiting the restroom without carrying any of the same items. She later allegedly entered a fitting room with Macy’s shopping bag filled with items before exiting with the bag “noticeably empty” and her purse “significantly larger than when she had entered.” Another video is alleged to show Talby walking past checkout points and leaving the store.

After a review of security camera video by loss prevention staff, followed by a check of the restroom and fitting room, they apprehended the suspect in another location before calling police. After officers detained and Talby and read her her rights, she allegedly told them she was “deciding whether she should walk out of the store with the items or if she should pay for them,” and ultimately decided to walk out. She allegedly stated she was “unsure of why she did it, and that she shouldn’t have done it,” the report said.

The report listed a total of 22 items $7.99 to $99.50, surpassing the $750 minimum that constitutes a grand theft charge. Talby was taken to the Palm Beach County Jail, where she was later released after posting a $1,000 bond which had been reduced from an initial $5,000 bond.
