Boca Raton will participate in the “International Coastal Cleanup” effort this coming weekend, with residents gathering at Spanish River Park to conduct a sweep of the grounds and remove debris that has collected in the environment.

The cleanup is part of a worldwide effort that not only takes trash out of the environment, but also provides valuable data to Ocean Conservancy to help them combat the growing problems of plastic in the world’s oceans. Using a smartphone app, volunteers keep track and report what they and their groups removed from the beach. The data is then used to inform reports – and ultimately policies – on the health of the ocean environment.

Volunteers will receive free tee shirts while supplies last, and community service hours are given to those seeking them. Pre-registration is required for the event. Those interested can call 561-544-8606 to reserve a spot; space is limited. Children and teens under 18 must participate with a registered parent or guardian (no drop offs). The cleanup is subject to cancellation due to inclement weather.

The event will be held this Saturday, Sept. 21 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Spanish River Park, 3001 N. State Road A1A.
