A 62-year-old man from Staten Island, N.Y. has been charged with battery after an altercation turned physical at The Boca Raton resort, with the suspect being brought to jail from his hotel room after a number of police units responded to the call.
The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. on Sept. 13 at the luxury resort on E. Camino Real. According to a police report, officers arrived after all parties were separated and, with the help of security officers, began piecing together the details of the fracas that erupted earlier with the help of security video footage. The investigation culminated in the arrest of Robert Schulman, 62, of Staten Island, N.Y., who was charged with battery.
The report states that video appeared to show a man having a conversation with a woman when a second man entered the frame. The second man, later identified as Schulman, engaged the alleged victim in conversation shortly before the physical confrontation began. The victim’s name has been redacted for privacy purposes.
“After initial strikes and punches to one another, [the victim] falls to the ground and becomes defenseless,” the report stated. “Schulman then approaches [the victim], who is lying on the ground, and proceeds to kick him in the face multiple times.”
Police eventually learned that the woman to whom the victim was speaking was Schulman’s wife, though he said in an interview later that he had never met either person before that evening and he did not know what precipitated the physical altercation. Surveillance video only showed the two speaking, according to the report.
The victim “had cuts to his forehead and face and his jaw was sore,” but he ultimately declined medical treatment from EMTs who arrived on the scene.
Schulman was arrested at his hotel room, where he was located by the time officers arrived. He allegedly told police he saw the victim talking to his wife, which led him to intervene and resulted in the two exchanging “strikes and punches.” A police officers asked Schulman why he appeared to have continued striking the victim after he was down, to which he allegedly replied that he was already “in the fight.”
Schulman was transported to the Palm Beach County Jail and was freed about five hours later after posting $1,000 bail.
