Rescuers successfully brought a distressed swimmer to shore near Boynton Inlet Sunday morning, but the still-unidentified man ultimately died at a local hospital about an hour later, authorities said.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, a beachgoer called Manalapan police at 10:32 a.m. Sunday. Police immediately alerted Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue, who rushed to the scene about a quarter-mile north of an unguarded beach near the inlet.

Security officers and medics from a nearby estate rescued the man from the rough surf and rip currents, administering CPR until Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue arrived. The male swimmer was transported to Bethesda East Hospital, Boynton Beach, where he was pronounced dead at 11:17 a.m. by the emergency room staff.

His identity was unknown Sunday night, according to PBSO. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death, a statement said.
