A church and school located adjacent to several major thoroughfares in Boca Raton has been granted approval for a major project that will include the demolition of multiple buildings and the reconstruction of new ones.

The city’s planning board has approved a plan by Advent Lutheran Church and School, located at 300 E. Yamato Road, to demolish and replace three, one-story buildings with a two-story addition to an existing two two-story building.

The Advent Lutheran complex includes a church, school and facilities for community groups and outreach. It sits on a 9.75 acre property bordered by Yamato Road on one side, Dixie Highway on another, and NE 5th Avenue to the rear. The plan calls for the demolition of three one-story buildings that contain a collective 8,967 square feet. The two story building along Dixie Highway would then be expanded with two additional stories that would contain 16,833 square feet of space. The plan also calls for a small, 450 square foot accessory storage building, plus site improvements including the addition of sidewalks.

The space will accommodate two new middle school classrooms, expand a fellowship hall by about 1,000 square feet, and add 1,800 square feet of new office space.

The church’s application does not propose to increase the capacity of the sanctuary, which holds 366 congregants, nor the maximum number of students in the elementary school from 250 children. A daycare, preschool and kindergarten portion will remain at 305 students, while the complex will continue to provide about 70 senior citizens with daytime care.

The front yard setback of the complex will be reduced from 95-feet to 53-feet.

The church was originally built in 1960 and has expanded significantly in the decades since. The last change to the property occurred in 2012, when the senior services functions were permitted.
