More than a dozen people were injured when a Brightline high-speed train collided with a Delray Beach Fire-Rescue vehicle just south of the Atlantic Avenue crossing Saturday.
The accident was reported just after 10:45 a.m., and crews were still in the process of cleaning up the wreckage by nightfall. A firetruck could be seen completely on its side with a field of debris strewn around it. Tow crews appeared to be attempting to connect a winch to the largest pieces of the truck in an effort to remove it from the tracks, however there were multiple large sections of the truck in different locations.
According to a statement from Delray Beach officials, three city firefighters were transported to a local hospital, where they remain in stable condition. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue provided assistance, transporting 12 individuals from the train to the hospital with minor injuries.
An active investigation into the cause of the collision is currently underway by the Delray Beach Police Department, officials from Brightline, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). As a result of the crash, E. Atlantic Avenue at SE 1st Avenue was temporarily shut down, and streets in the area were experiencing bottlenecks as motorists used alternate routes to the busy downtown corridor.
Authorities anticipate that the roadway will reopen once the investigation and any necessary cleanup are complete.
