A motor vehicle accident earlier this month on State Road 7 (US 441) in unincorporated Boca Raton has claimed the life of an 83-year-old Coconut Creek man, with two others left injured.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department said the crash, which occurred 6:28 p.m. on Nov. 7, resulted in the death of John Carleton Evelyn on Tuesday. His passenger, Nancy Evelyn, 78, suffered serious injures, as did the driver of a second vehicle, Kevin Frias, 29, of Boca Raton.

An accident reported released by PBSO said the crash occurred on SR-7 adjacent to the West Boca Square shopping center – anchored by Target – just south of Palmetto Park Road. John Evelyn, driving a 2024 Kia Seltos, was making a left turn into the shopping plaza when turned into the path of Frias’ Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, which had the right of way while traveling southbound.

The passenger side front corner of the Kia impacted the front of the Toyota, which was spun southwest and came to rest on the south shoulder of the shopping center entrance. The Kia rotated counterclockwise, then began to roll backwards in a southwest direction. The car settled in a ditch on the west side of the road, south of the plaza entrance.

Both occupants of the Kia were taken to Delray Medical Center, with John Evelyn, the driver, passing away Nov. 20 as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Nancy Evelyn suffered serious injuries, but survived, authorities said.

The crash was considered accidental with no evidence of alcohol or drugs playing a role.
