Boca Raton’s Mizner Park will add some new amenities, as well as new security features after reports of damage to some items on public display.

The city’s Community Redevelopment Agency last week heard an update from Executive Director George S. Brown, who also serves as city manager, on the improvements planned for the shopping and entertainment district. City staff, he said, are in the process of “refreshing” Mizner Park and other downtown areas.

Cooling Off

The CRA, Brown said, is moving forward with installing water bottle filling stations that will also include “dog fountains” where Mizner Park’s four-legged visitors can grab a drink. The city has contracted with a plumber to run a new potable water line and install the first station at the north end of the complex just east of the amphitheater. That station will be completed sometime in February.

Two more stations, one in the center, south of the main decorative fountain and gazebo, and the other on the south end near the “Downtown Boca” branded items, require more extensive work for installation, he said, including possible jack and boring of Plaza Real for utility connections. A meeting with the contractor in January resulted in the development of a schedule for the work, which will likely begin in late March with an anticipated completion date in November, prior to the holidays.

More Security

Mizner Park will also receive new security cameras amidst some reports of damage to items in the area.

City staff, Brown said, has begun coordination with the IT, Municipal and Recreation departments to research options to install new security cameras which will require installation of fiber lines, and access to network and power connection. A walkthrough to assess the number of cameras and locations, and connectivity to fiber and power will be completed in February, he said.

The security cameras will, hopefully, arrive sooner rather than later. Downtown Boca branded items “continue to have damage,” Brown said, including letters removed from the oversized Adirondak chair and an umbrella that had been sliced with a sharp object.

“We were able to reinstall new lettering and are working on a more permanent solution for chair signage; also, we have ordered extra umbrellas,” Brown said in a memo.

Additionally, café tables and chairs have been placed on a weekly cleaning schedule to alleviate “some of the general usage and water stains,” Brown said.

Finally, repainting of benches and trash bins to black is in progress, with anticipated completion in February; the selection of new plantings is in progress, which will begin in February and be completed end of April; and re-sodding of entire public area is scheduled to begin in late February and to be completed end of April.

In nearby Sanborn Square, an order for new recycling bind was placed last fall, with the anticipated date of delivery and installation in mid-February.
